Torchwood: The Culling Announced!

From the comicbook.com website:

The Torchwood team is back for a new adventure in comic book form.

Titan Comics has announced Torchwood: The Culling, a new series that reunites Captain Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper for a new adventure. The series is written by Torchwood star John Barrowman and his sister, author Carole Barrowman, and features artwork by Neil Edwards.

The synopsis for Torchwood remains somewhat vague, but it and the first issue’s covers tease the return of Captain John Hart, Jack Harness’s former professional partner in the Time Agency and romantic partner. Will Hart return as Jack’s friend or foe?

Check out the solicitation text below and the covers in the attached gallery. Torchwood: The Culling #1 will be available to pre-order from the July PREVIEWS catalog.

This will be the third Torchwood story told by Titan Comics and the Barrowmans following Torchwood: World Without End and Torchwood: Station Zero.

The new series joins Titan Comics' current slate of Doctor Who series, including Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor, Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor, Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor, and Doctor Who: Ghost Stories. A crossover event, Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension, is planned for this summer.

Torchwood is a spinoff of Doctor Who that launched in 2006 and took a darker and more mature tone than its parent show, frequently dealing with adult themes of mortality and sexuality. The spinoff was inspired by John Barrowman's immortal Captain Jack Harkness, a fan-favorite supporting character during Russell T. Davies' early seasons of Doctor Who.

Torchwood ran for four seasons on television. The final season was co-production of the BBC and Starz.

The fifth season of Torchwood was recently announced and will be released in audio drama format. Barrowman will return to his role as Captain Jack Harkness, with Eve Myles returning as Gwen and Kai Owen returning as Rhys.

TORCHWOOD: THE CULLING #1

Artist: Neil Edwards

FC - 32pp - $3.99 - On sale: September 27, 2017

When we last saw Captain Jack, Gwen and the rest of the new Torchwood team, they had just defeated an alien invasion in the Arctic…but they missed a mysterious pod, buried under the ice, that held a seemingly familiar face. Now Captain Jack must battle his worst nightmare…or greatest daydream!

Doctor Who Adventures Ceases Publication

Earlier this week it was announced that Doctor Who Adventures magazine will cease publication with issue 24 which was just released. John Freeman posted the following on his excellent website downthetubes.net:

Panini UK has announced Doctor Who Adventures has gone on hiatus, effective immediately, although we’re told it may be re-launched with the arrival of a new series lead in 2018.

The company has published over 24 issues of the title, the last (Issue 24) on sale this week; taking it over from Immediate Media. However, recent ABC sales data has indicated numbers have been disappointing and a far cry from the title’s early success.

The decline in sales in recent years has in part been attributed by some to the erratic schedule of the show in recent years.

(The Audit Bureau of Circulation twice yearly, February 2008, report gave the Doctor Who Adventures title a circulation figure of 150,763 a rise of some 44 per cent on the previous six months, making it one of the top performing titles published in the UK, and positioned it top in the children’s sector, and the 52nd top title overall from all categories).

The full statement from Panini, posted on the company website on 16th June 2017,  is as follows:

"We are pausing the publication of Dr Who Adventures magazine and will not be publishing regular issues in the near future. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyalty to the magazine, which we greatly appreciate and we hope that you have enjoyed the title as much as we have. Current subscribers will be contacted in due course with regards to refunds."

First published by BBC Magazines, from Issue 248, Doctor Who Adventures – whose frequency has varied throughout its shelf life since it launched in 2006 – was published under licence from BBC Worldwide by Immediate Media. The title was aimed squarely at younger Who fans with a mix of comic strips, features and text stories, supported by a range of cover mounted gifts.

After Issue 363, DWA was relaunched with a new issue 1,  published by Panini edited by Jason Quinn. The lead strip was drawn by Russ Leach and written by several creators, including former Doctor Who TV series script editor Andrew Cartmel and Tommy Donbavand.

Jason and Russ are now working together on Panini’s Ben 10 title.
